James E. Duffy

has devoted much of his professional life to developing educational materials that help people understand vocational and technical subjects. Mr. Duffy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Indiana State University. After college, Mr. Duffy worked as an automotive instructor at Brandon High School in Brandon, Florida, and at Hillsborough Adult Education Center in Tampa, Florida. After teaching for several years, Mr. Duffy joined Goodheart-Willcox Publisher as a technical editor and eventually began writing textbooks. In addition to Modern Automotive Technology, Mr. Duffy's books include Auto Electricity and Electronics, Auto Engine Repair, Automatic Transmissions and Transaxles, and Manual Drive Trains and Axles.

Brian LaCroix developed an interest with all things mechanical at a young age. His desire to understand how things work led him to repairing powersports vehicles and signing up for an automotive course when he reached high school. Completing this automotive course reaffirmed his passion to learn everything he could about the engines, technology, and mechanical systems equipped in vehicles. It also served as the catalyst for his future career plans.

After winning the Vermont state Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition during high school, Mr. LaCroix went on to complete the Ford Automotive Student Service Education Training (ASSET) program, while earning an Associate of Applied Science degree from Columbia-Greene Community College in New York. He entered the automotive service profession after graduation, eventually working as a dual-trained Ford Senior Master Technician and Mazda Master Technician before transitioning to an instructor position with the Capital Region Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in Albany, New York, where he has taught since 2007. He is also an adjunct faculty for Hudson Valley Community College in New York, which provides his high school students with opportunities to earn college credits while they are still enrolled in high school.

Since beginning his teaching career, Mr. LaCroix has achieved the Automobile and Collision Repair program accreditations for his school's automotive programs through the ASE Education Foundation. He is also trained as an ASE Education Foundation Evaluation Team Leader (ETL) and has performed on-site visits and reviews to complete ASE program accreditations at other automotive training schools. Receiving the ASE Industry Education Alliance Outstanding Instructor award in 2015 and the Byrl Shoemaker/ASE Education Foundation Instructor of the Year award in 2018 marked two major professional highlights in his teaching career.

Mr. LaCroix is currently an ASE-Certified World Class Technician who holds 26 ASE certifications: as a Master Automobile Technician (with A9 certification), Master Collision Repair Technician, and Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technician. He has also earned ASE certifications in the ASE Advanced Level L1, L2, L3, and L4 test areas and the Maintenance and Light Repair test (G1) area.

As an instructor, Mr. LaCroix most enjoys sharing his vast experience working on powersports vehicles, automobiles, heavy equipment, and medium- and heavy-duty trucks with his students. Every day he strives to "pay it forward" and ignite his students' passions for the industry, just as his talented automotive instructors once did for him.
