Title Overview

Title Overview

Electricity: Theory and Applications provides valuable insight into the electrical theories and concepts that form a solid foundation of knowledge, onto which more advanced learning and understanding can be structured. Designed for foundational electrical theory courses in electrical technology, construction, and industrial maintenance programs, the textbook features a clear and simple presentation of concepts and many illustrations. Each chapter of the textbook begins with a Sparking Discussion question that encourages classroom discussion. To emphasize the importance of safety for anyone working on or around electric circuits, systems, and equipment, the text provides safety guidelines, safety-related issues, and Safety Alert features. The author also addresses the importance of math skills with two chapters dedicated to reinforcing fundamental math concepts required for electrical theory applications. Example features provide step-by-step guidance on utilizing, manipulating, and navigating mathematical expressions, and Now It's Your Turn features allow learners to perform calculations and solve problems on their own. Math Sidebar features provide short refreshers of foundational math concepts at the point of application. Shedding Light features provide advice and guidance that is applicable to on-the-job situations, and Know the Code features point out specific items from typical building codes. End-of-chapter materials include a Summary and three levels of assessments: Measuring Your Potential questions, Plug-In questions, and Making the Connection questions.

  • Lab Workbook includes chapter review questions to assess comprehension of chapter content and hands-on lab activities to apply the concepts.
  • Electrical Animations enrich learning by providing a more thorough explanation of concepts from the textbook.
  • Math Animations provide step-by-step guidance, from selecting the correct formula, analyzing wire diagrams to find circuit readings to insert into the formula, and then providing the steps to solve the problem.

has been involved in building trades and career and technical education for over 45 years, with 30 years in front of the classroom. He has served as a field service professional, controls specialist, system designer, company owner, college professor, administrator, consultant, and industry-leading author. Over the past three decades, Mr. Silberstein has taught at a number of private and public secondary and post-secondary institutions. Mr. Silberstein has authored more than a dozen textbooks covering a wide range of building science and career and technical education topics. He can be seen discussing building science on many podcasts and webcasts and at many live industry events, conventions, and conferences.

Mr. Silberstein's undergraduate work and bachelor's degree include electrical engineering, economics, and operations management. He obtained his master of science degree in renewable/sustainable energy and environmental systems. As part of his graduate work, he created an introductory energy course in wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, and hydropower.

As a National Programs Director at the ESCO Institute, Mr. Silberstein presently works with over 1500 career and technical education programs across the country. It is in this capacity that he helps institutions start new career and technical education programs and helps others bring their existing training to a higher level.

Mr. Silberstein is an active member of many building science and electrical industry organizations including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He also had the title of CMHE (Certified Master HVACR Educators) bestowed upon him by HVAC Excellence, which classifies him as one of only 150 certified master HVACR educators in the country. He also carries ASHRAE's BEAP (Building Energy Assessment Professional) credential.

What Educators Are Saying

QuoteThe basic theory content is written in a well-developed, simple language manner that is approachable, yet comprehensive in content, for beginning students in electricity. The basic theory is comprehensive enough that it is not just basic electrical theory, it is comprehensive enough to build on for more advanced theory concepts. Quote
