FAQ list > How do I weight categories or grade items within the Gradebook?

 
To weight categories or grade items within the Gradebook, you must use either the Weighted mean of grades or Simple weighted mean of grades aggregation methods. For more information, see “What is the Gradebook Setup page of the Gradebook?” and “What aggregation methods are available for use within the Gradebook?”
Select the Gradebook setup link in the Settings block in the right-hand column.

To weight categories within the Categories and items page of the Gradebook, select the Edit menu associated with the name of the course.

Select Edit settings.

Use the Aggregation drop-down to change the overall aggregation method for the course to either of the methods mentioned above.

If you are using Weighted mean of grades to weight categories, the Weights column will appear. Within the Weights column, there will be text fields corresponding to each category. Adjust the weights in these text fields as desired.

When you have finished adjusting the weights, scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save changes.

If you are using Simple weighted mean of grades to weight categories, the weight of a category will be equal to the maximum grade for that category (i.e. maximum grade = 100; weight = 100). To adjust the weight of a category, select the Edit menu associated with the category.

Select Edit settings.

Within the Category total section, change the number within the Maximum grade field.

Select Save changes and repeat as desired with other categories.

To weight grade items within the Gradebook, follow the steps above to change the aggregation methods for the category/categories containing the grade items. Use either of the aggregation methods mentioned in step 1.
If you are using Weighted mean of grades to weight grade items, the Weight column will appear. Within the Weight column, there will be a text field corresponding to each grade item. Adjust the weights in these text fields as desired.

If you are using Simple weighted mean of grades, the weight of a grade item will be equal to the maximum grade for that item (i.e. maximum grade = 100; weight = 100). To adjust the weight of an item, change the maximum grade for that grade item. To do so, you must edit the settings of the original activity from the Course Outline. For more information, see “How do I edit items on the Course Outline?”
