FAQ list > How do I create an Advanced Forum?

Use Forum activities to encourage discussion and conversation among your class.
Select Turn editing on in the upper-right corner.
Navigate to the section of the Course Outline where you want to add the Forum.
Select the Add an activity or resource link.
Select Advanced forum from the left-hand column.
Select Add.
Enter a Forum name that is relevant to the content you will be posting.
Use the text editor to write a Description of the assignment. Select Show editing tools to view full text editor tools.
Select the Display description on course page if you would like the assignment description to display on the Course Outline.
Select the Forum type you would like to create. Click on the blue “i” icons to learn more about each setting.
Adjust other settings as desired:
Adjust the Post options settings to allow marking as substantive, post bookmarking, private replies, and anonymous posting. This section also allows you to determine whether or not to display the word count of each forum post.
Adjust the Attachments settings to adjust allowed attachment file size and adjust the maximum number of attachments students are allowed to post.
Adjust the Subscription settings to force a subscription method:
  • Optional subscription allows students to decide whether or not to subscribe.
  • Forced subscription subscribes all students. Unsubscribing is not allowed.
  • Auto subscription subscribes all students initially, but unsubscribing is allowed.
  • Subscription disabled does not allow students to subscribe.
Adjust the Discussion locking setting to determine whether or not discussions are locked after a period of inactivity.
Adjust the Post threshold for blocking for blocking if you would like to block students from posting more than a certain number of posts over a certain period of time.
Adjust the Grade settings to determine how the activity is graded and to select a gradebook location for the Assignment. You may also set a grade students must achieve to pass this activity.
Adjust Ratings if more than one grader will be rating students' forum posts and a different grading aggregate is necessary. You can also restrict ratings to items within a particular date range.
Select Save and display to view your Forum.
