FAQ list > How do I create an Advanced Forum?

Use Forum activities to encourage discussion and conversation among your class.
Select Turn editing on in the upper-right corner.
Navigate to the section of the Course Outline where you want to add the Forum.
Select the Add an activity or resource link.
Select Advanced forum from the left-hand column.
Select Add.
Enter a Forum name that is relevant to the content you will be posting.
Use the text editor to write a Description of the assignment. Select Show editing tools to view full text editor tools.
Select the Display description on course page if you would like the assignment description to display on the Course Outline.
Select the Forum type you would like to create. Click on the blue “i” icons to learn more about each setting.
Select Enable anonymous posting if you would like to allow this feature.
Adjust other settings as desired:
Adjust the Attachments and word count settings to adjust allowed attachment file size, adjust the maximum number of attachments students are allowed, and to choose whether or not to display the word count of each forum post.
Adjust the Subscription and tracking settings to force a subscription method:
  • Optional subscription leaves subscription decisions up to the student.
  • Forced subscription subscribes all students to receive e-mail copies of posts. Unsubscribing is not allowed.
  • Auto subscription subscribes all students initially, but unsubscription is allowed at anytime.
  • Subscription disabled does not allow any student to be subscribed to the forum.
  • If Read tracking is enabled, students can track read and unread messages.
Adjust the Post threshold for blocking if you would like to block students from posting more than a certain number of posts over a certain period of time.
Adjust the Grade settings to determine how the activity is graded and to select a gradebook location for the Assignment. You may also set a grade students must achieve to pass this activity.
Adjust Ratings if more than one grader will be rating students' forum posts and a different grading aggregate is necessary. You can also restrict ratings to items within a particular date range.
Select Save and display to view your Forum.
